An Apple a Day….better than you thought?

Yes, we’ve all heard the adage, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.”  And perhaps you’ve seen some of the articles and silly studies where people try to take it literally – they ask “can you really avoid all types of maladies because you have an apple a day?”  Of course not!  But – eating an apple every day – especially a Granny Smith apple – has more power over your health than you might think!

You might already know that apples are high in fiber and Vitamin C, low in sodium and calories, and of course, are delicious and easy to take along with you as a quick, on-the-go snack.  What you might not have already known is that these delicious, crispy treats also have a high content of dietary fiber and polyphenols, and other compounds that don’t get digested – and this is especially true for the Granny Smith variety!  While all apples are good for you, not all apples are equal: Granny Smiths are proving to have the best of these properties!

So, even though you might chew your apple like crazy, some of these compounds remain intact all the way through your digestive system.  According to the Washington State University news, these “undigested” compounds make it all the way to your colon, where they are fermented by bacteria — and this benefits the growth of friendly bacteria in the gut.  This promotes a healthy gut, which helps prevent some of the disorders associated with obesity.  And if obesity isn’t something you’re worried about, you’ll be pleased to know that these properties also increase your satisfaction: you’ll feel fuller, for longer, when you make the choice to eat an apple.
